چکیده

We present a detailed analysis of two spectroscopic binaries based on new observations obtained with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI). While the data calibration needs reÐnement, Ðrst results show the impressive potential of NPOI, both in terms of speed and precision, for imaging and modeling the orbits of spectroscopic binaries. We determine the orbital parameters of Mizar A (f1 Ursae Majoris) and Matar (g Pegasi), and derive masses and luminosities using published radial velocities and Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes. The results on Mizar A are compared to earlier work done with the Mark III interferometer, while data from this instrument were combined with NPOI data in the Matar analysis.

Diameters of δ Cephei and η Aquilae Measured with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer

We have measured the diameters of the Cepheid variables δ Cephei (18 nights) and η Aquilae (11 nights) with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer. The primary results of these observations are the mean angular diameters 〈θLD〉 of these Cepheids: 1.520 ± 0.014 milliseconds of arc (mas) for δ Cep and 1.69 ± 0.04 mas for η Aql. We also report limb-darkened diameters for the check stars in this ...

Asymmetric Surface Brightness Distribution of Altair Observed with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer

An asymmetric surface brightness distribution of the rapidly rotating A7IV-V star, Altair, has been measured by the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI). The observations were recorded simultaneously using a triangle of three long baselines of 30m, 37m, and 64m, on 19 spectral channels, covering the wavelength range of 520nm to 850nm. The outstanding characteristics of these observation...

Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer observations of geosynchronous satellites.

Using a 15.9  m baseline at the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI), we have successfully detected interferometric fringes in observations of the geosynchronous satellite (geosat) DirecTV-9S while it glinted on two nights in March 2009. The fringe visibilities can be fitted by a model consisting of two components, one resolved (≳3.7  m) and one unresolved (∼1.1  m). Both the length of ...

Issn 1845–8319 Binary Studies with the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer

We present recent results from observations of binary and multiple systems made with the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) on ζ and σ Orionis A, ξ Tauri, HR 6493, and b Persei. We explain how the orbital modeling is performed and show that even triple systems can be constrained with the data.

The Accuracy of Ground-Based Optical Interferometry Observations

The problem of wide-angle astrometry via interferometry is to recover the two coordinates for each star from the observed delays. In the absence of atmospheric turbulence, the geometrical delay can be dened as: dG;ij(t) dj(t) di(t) = Bij(t) ŝ0 Cij . Here the geometrical delay is the di erence between the delay line lengths di and dj that is required to equalize the e ective optical paths from t...
